Learn About Steel, Wrought Iron & Aluminum Entry Gates

Nearly all of our gate designs can be built from either steel or aluminum. What’s the distinction? We’ve got a short primer on the difference between steel vs. aluminum driveway gates.

Steel Custom Driveway Gates

We most commonly create steel driveway gates because they are so strong and durable. Much like its precursor iron, steel is more susceptible to corrosion than aluminum when exposed to moisture and oxygen.

Aluminum Custom Driveway Gates

When the situation calls for it, we also build custom-aluminum driveway gates. Aluminum gates are a good choice for those who need a lighter gate or heightened corrosion resistance. Aluminum is less than half the weight of steel and has a very high strength to weight ratio. Although aluminum doesn’t actually “rust” it will still corrode in the form of “white rust” when not properly coated.

Custom Wrought Iron Driveway Gates

We also build custom wrought iron driveway gates. These are typically very heavy gates that require a large gate opener, thus adding expense to the project.

Driveway Gates – FAQs

Have questions about driveway gates? Here our professionals answer some of our most frequently asked questions!

The driveway gate should be at least a foot or two wider than your driveway. You have to be sure to leave room for the hinges. If there is concrete or asphalt, use a tape measure and start about a foot away from the hard driveway surface. Measure across the driveway to about a foot past the hard surface on the other side.

Some local jurisdictions require at least a 14′ driveway gate opening to allow their full sized emergency equipment to easily pass through in the event of an emergency. We recommend at least a 12′ wide driveway gate for all other areas. This helps avoid “close call” gate collisions with distracted delivery drivers.

A swinging driveway gate is much easier to install and automate than a sliding driveway gate. A sliding driveway gate requires more room to operate in most instances,  and is more expensive to automate than a swinging driveway gate. A sliding driveway gate requires extra supports welded to the end of the gate for a cantilever style sliding gate.

A single swing gate is typically used for up to a 12′ wide driveway. Anything larger than 12′ wide generally will be a dual swing gate. A curved driveway may be better for a dual swing gate, depending on which side of the curve the gate hinge post will be located.

Many of our clients have successfully installed their own driveway gates. With some advanced planning anyone can install our driveway gates because the gate simply bolts to the post with two bolts. The gates can be set down on blocks laid on the ground, bolted to the gate post, and the post hole filled with concrete while the posts are held level. A DIY gate install isn’t for everyone, though. You may wish to hire a contractor to install the gate for you.

The driveway gate should be at least a foot or two wider than your driveway. You have to be sure to leave room for the hinges. If there is concrete or asphalt, use a tape measure and start about a foot away from the hard driveway surface. Measure across the driveway to about a foot past the hard surface on the other side.

Driveway gates typically come in standard manufactured heights of 48″, 60″ and 72″ tall. Other sizes would require a custom order to be placed. The height of the gate should match with the fencing that the gate may be connected to.

Your will need to install a 110 volt 20 amp power supply to one side of the gate entrance, where the gate opener control box will be located. This will be used to charge the batteries on your electric gate operators. The power wire should be appropriately sized to the length of the overall run to account for voltage drop. Some gate openers only require a 12 volt wire to run a trickle charger. A solar powered gate opener may be an option for remote areas that get at least 4 hours of sunlight per day, year round.

No, without a sufficiently charged battery the gate opener cannot open your gate even if there is 120v or solar power available.
