Single Swing vs. Dual Swing Driveway Gates: Which Do I Need?

The choice between a single swing and a dual swing gate depends primarily on your driveway width and the available clearance space. A single swing gate is generally more economical because it requires fewer hinges and only one automatic opener. However, dual swing gates are often preferred for their aesthetic symmetry and because they cut the swing radius in half, making them the only viable option for driveways with limited space or steep slopes.

1. The Space Factor (Swing Radius)

The most critical factor is the “arc of travel.”

  • Single Swing: If you have a 12-foot driveway, a single gate needs 12 feet of clear space behind the gate to swing open. If you park your car too close to the entrance, you might hit the gate.
  • Dual Swing: By splitting the gate into two 6-foot leaves, you only need 6 feet of clearance. This is crucial for properties with short driveways or tight courtyards.

2. Automation Costs

If you plan to automate your gate, the cost difference is significant.

  • Single Gates require only one gate operator.
  • Dual Gates require a dual gate operator kit (which includes two motors and extra wiring). This typically adds $1,500–$3,000 to the automation package cost.

3. Handling Slopes and Grades

If your driveway slopes uphill from the road, a dual gate is almost always better. Because a gate must swing level, an uphill driveway forces you to mount the gate higher off the ground to prevent the bottom from scraping the asphalt as it opens. Since a dual gate swings only half the distance, the gap at the bottom of the gate can be much smaller, keeping your pets in and pests out.

4. Shipping & Logistics

Surprisingly, dual gates are often cheaper to ship than single gates. A single 14-foot gate creates a massive crate that requires specialized freight handling. Two 7-foot gates fit on a standard pallet size, often reducing shipping costs and making it easier for you to unload upon delivery. On a further note, we are often able to arrange delivery directly to your gate and automation installer who is able to receive large shipments at their facility. Another option is to pick the shipment up directly from your local freight terminal using a flatbed or utility trailer.

The JDR Design Perspective

From an artistic standpoint, dual swing gates offer a grand, symmetrical entrance that frames the property beautifully. However, we specialize in creating continuous art scenes—like our Wildlife Designs—that flow seamlessly across the gap, making a dual gate look like a unified canvas when closed.
