How These Knoxville TN Custom Driveway Gates Were Made
When a horse farm owner near the Knoxville area came to us wanting a custom metal driveway gate that reflected what he loved, we knew exactly the kind of project this would be.
The result: a fully custom steel-and-cedar entrance gate featuring a plasma cut running horse silhouette, finished in a stunning custom bronze powder coat. Here’s a look at how it came together, from raw steel to final installation.
Starting With Raw Steel
Every custom gate we build starts with a custom gate design that begins coming together on the shop floor with raw steel tubing, cut and fitted to the exact dimensions of the driveway opening. For this project, that meant building a frame strong enough to handle daily use for decades, while still leaving room for the decorative elements that would make the gate one-of-a-kind.
Cutting and Fitting the Horse Silhouette

The centerpiece of this gate is a hand-fitted, plasma cut running horse, set inside an oval cutout in the center of the frame of these Knoxville TN custom driveway gates. Each part of the horse – mane, body, legs – is individually cut, cleaned up, and welded into place before being ground smooth. This is the part of the process that takes the most patience: getting the motion and proportion of the horse design to look exactly right takes careful attention to detail and adjustment, compared to just buying generic clip art.

Welding the Driveway Gate Frame Together

Once the decorative panel is complete, it gets integrated into the full gate frame of these Knoxville TN custom driveway gates. Every seam is welded, ground down, and finished smooth so the final product reads as one continuous piece of art rather than a collection of parts. This is also the stage where we build in the arched top rail and vertical picket details that give the gate its finished silhouette.
Powder Coating for a Long Lasting Finish
After sanding and preparing the metal surface profile, the entire gate gets a coat of primer/base color, followed by the custom bronze topcoat. Powder coating gives the steel a durable, weather-resistant finish that will hold up against sun, rain, and years of Tennessee weather, all while giving the gate its rich, deep bronze color.
*JDR Metal Art includes a 20 year finish warranty on the powder coat.*
Site Prep and Installation
On-site, we set the gate posts first, making sure everything is leveled and squared before the gate itself ever arrives. Once the posts are set and cured, the gate panels are hung, and cedar wood inserts are added to the lower portion of each panel for warmth and contrast against the dark metalwork.

The Finished Gate
The finished product: a driveway entrance that’s as functional as it is eye-catching, with a running horse silhouette that fits naturally into the wooded, rural setting. Steel for strength and structure, cedar for warmth, and a custom bronze powder coat that ties it all together.
